  • AITAH for expecting my sister to buy me a car?

I (25f) moved away for grad school and decided to leave my car to my sister (21f).
  • When I came back my sister confessed that she parked my car in a shady/private place and someone stole all the tires & since the car wasn't moved it was towed.
  • She didn't want to deal w/ the fees to get the car from the tow yard so she just ignored it for 3 months and was using my moms car.
  • After making some phone calls I found out that a tow yard has claimed ownership of my car since it was unclaimed and they sent notice to our house.
  • (I can't find any mail letters of the notice). - they emailed over all the proof.
  • I bought this car off my best friend (it was a 2019 toyota corolla w/ 95k miles) I paid $8,000 and it was in really good shape.
  • I only had it for 2 years and what hurts the most is that my sister didn't even have the decency to tell me the truth.
  • She was sending me old pictures of my car pretending everything was fine. I feel completely used by my sister.

  • was willing to walk to work everyday so that she could have a reliable car.
  • And while I am stressing trying to decided if suing the tow yard is possible she bought a new car and is planning a vacation.
  • Anyways I've told my sister she needs to buy me a used car or give me money (to make a down payment) on a new one.
  • I am expecting no less than $6000. She said she has her own car payments to focus on and would help me with rides, but nothing else.
  • Everyone keeps saying I am being overly sensitive and as an older sister I should forgive and be easy on my sister.
  • My mother said since I am frugal and good with money I would be able to save pretty fast for another car.
  • I am not in the best mental space so I am hoping to get advice from others to see if I'm too harsh or expecting too much.

  • Awkward-Train 1584 What about small Claims court? You loaned her the car, she never returned it. Pretty simple case. That is going to be your best option.
  • OP ponderingpuff I am looking into that now. Thank you
  • BeeEnvironmental6299 Your sister bought a car and is planning a vacation after she destroyed your $8000 car? And your parents are backing her up? No way you need to sue her and get that money back. Your sister is an entitled spoiled brat and your parents are enabling her. They should all be ashamed of themselves.
  • OP ponderingpuff My sister is the favorite amongst the family so yes they will back her up in everything. And are just labelling me as dramatic.
  • Sea-Operation-6123 Your parents never noticed the car had disappeared? Does your family often lose cars? NTA - your family is highly dysfunctional & irresponsible
  • OP ponderingpuff My parents knew and decided not to tell me. They all assumed that nothing would happen to the car and could stay in the tow yard forever.
  • Friendly_Ninja_8545 my guess is that the sister is the golden child
  • OP ponderingpuff Yes my sister is the favorite child so my parents will over look everything she does wrong. I know my parents will disown me if I try to take legal action against my sister
  • IllustratorNew8801 I know she's 21 but seriously, get your parents involved. She fucked up big time and should compensate you.
  • FeralBorg Ask to borrow your sister's car, then sell the tires, catalytic converter, and anything else that's easy to remove. Use that money as a down payment for your own car, and tell your sister and mom that "they are good with money so they will figure out how to get it fixed" The actual answer is cut both of them out of your life, they are leeches.
